Welcome to Machesney Park, IL

Incorporated in 1981, Machesney Park is a vibrant community of more than 22,000 residents located along the beautiful Rock River.  Situated in Illinois' Stateline region, the Village is ideally located within a hour's drive of Chicago, Madison and Milwaukee, at the crossroads of I-90, I-39, IL 173 and US 20.

Large areas of Northern Illinois were opened up to settlement in the early 1830’s, after the end of the Black Hawk War. When the township form of government was instituted, the majority of what is now Machesney Park was located within Harlem Township. The early Dutch settlers chose the name Harlem to remind them of the Netherlands. Early settlers were relatively few in number and farmed large tracts of land.

Residential development began to grow in the early 20th century and started booming by the 1920’s. During this time, the Harlem Consolidated School District was formed to serve the educational needs of the growing community. Prior to the second world war, the old InterUrban rail line north to Beloit was abandoned and became North Second Street; it is now known as Illinois Route 251.

One of the community’s symbols in the early days was Machesney Airport, founded in 1927 by barnstormer - aviator Fred Machesney on the present site of Machesney Park Mall. The airfield served as the Rockford metro area airport until the 1950’s and was the site of much activity. In 1928, an attempted flight from Rockford to Sweden took off from the field; the two pilots crashed in Greenland and were safely rescued. During World War II, Machesney Field was a regular stop for many fighter aircraft being ferried to the Soviet Union.

The postwar period saw an even greater pattern of growth in residences and businesses, coupled with the formation of the North Park Public Water District and volunteer firefighting companies. The area was still unincorporated and was informally known as "North Park". The airport closed in 1974 and within a few years, Machesney Park Mall was developed. Citizens began a grass-roots incorporation movement in 1980 to form a Village, in order to ensure better services and to prevent adjacent cities from nibbling away at their commercial properties.

Machesney Park is a young community that is experiencing rapid retail, commercial and residential growth.  The Gateway District at IL 173 and 251 is the Village’s shopping Mecca, home to national big box stores, smaller specialty retail outlets, and numerous national and local restaurants.  This residential growth has helped to spur commercial growth, and the 2006-07 construction of an interchange ramp at IL 173 and I-90 has put the village on the map and opened the area to continued development.  With miles of Rock River frontage, Machesney Park is one of the more desirable locations with the Rockford metropolitan area.
